Cadet Achievement Tests & Exams

To advance in the Cadet Program and become eligible for promotions, cadets complete online achievement tests, drill and ceremonies performance tests, and written milestone award exams.

Drill & Ceremonies Performance Tests
Cadets who are studying the Learn to Lead tests will complete drill and ceremonies performance tests during Achievements 1 through 8 using CAP Test 78-2. This test is available in PDF only.

Online Achievement Tests
Test Site:  Log-in to E-Services and click "Cadet Online Tests."

Maj Dan Routier created The Guide to Starting E-Services to help new cadets navigate E-Services.

Available Tests:
(1)  All Aerospace Dimensions tests
(2)  All Aerospace Journey of Flight tests   (under review; will be available shortly)
(3)  Learn to Lead tests through the Mitchell Award

Please note that tests for the "old" leadership textbook, Leadership for the 21st Century, are available in hard copy only.

Question Bank: 25 questions per test, selected at random from a question bank

Time Limit: 30 minutes

Test Location:  Cadets may test at a time and place of their choosing (i.e.: 2am Saturday night at home in pajamas)

Format: Multiple-choice, open book. Passing score is raised to 80%.

Scoring:  Scores are automatically fed into the Cadet Promotions Application in e-Services. In case of failure, the cadet is locked out for 7 days. In case of failing the same test twice, the cadet is locked out until meeting with a senior member. Note: Scores do not feed into the Cadet Promotions Application and squadron leaders will not receive notification of test results unless cadets click "Finish."

Special Accommodations: Squadrons may support cadets who lack Internet access or have special educational needs by administering the tests via hard copy at the unit. Seniors may obtain a hard copy via E-Services; click "Cadet Online Testing," then "Admin," then the link to hard copy tests.

Performance Tests: Of course, drill and ceremonies will still be tested the “old fashioned way.”

Milestone Award Exams: As a safety valve protecting the integrity of cadet awards, milestone award exams will remain closed-book and controlled by the squadron.

Test Integrity: An honor statement will buttress the integrity of the testing program in an open-book environment. Before beginning an online test, cadets must agree to the following:

I certify that I am Cadet (Name). I will complete the following Cadet Achievement Test on my own, without help from another person. My only resource for this open-book test will be my cadet textbooks and class notes. [By clicking below,] I reaffirm my commitment to our Core Value of Integrity.

Testing Officers’ Guidance
The Testing Officers’ Quick Reference explains what tests and exams are in use, the dates of those editions, passing scores, and more. Adults who are newly assigned Testing Officers also are encouraged to review the in-depth position description found in the Cadet Program Officer’s Handbook, section 8.6.

Ordering Hard Copy Tests & Exams
All cadet milestone award exams remain locally-controlled hard copy items.

To obtain Cadet Programs tests and exams in hard copy, any senior member may, on behalf of their squadron, email the Cadets’ Registrar or call 877-227-9142 x203. In turn, the Cadets’ Registrar will mail the hard copy test or exam to the squadron’s mailing address. Please allow 7 days for delivery and plan accordingly.

Please note that if a hard copy is needed for a test that is normally taken online (i.e.: Learn to Lead and Aerospace Dimensions achievement tests), squadrons will need to access the Cadet Online Test System’s Admin Module in eServices, download the PDF versions of those tests, and print them. In other words, the only achievement tests available in hard copy from NHQ are the “old” Leadership for the 21st Century tests.

A Cultural Change: Academic knowledge will continue to be an important facet of cadet life. However, the move to online tests will deemphasize the notion that tests are the keys to promotions. Instead, achievement tests will be but one step along the promotion journey; demonstrating leadership skill and maturity in light of CAP's leadership expectations will become the true test for promotion readiness.
